About Hayesville

Hayesville, North Carolina is a small mountain town in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountain chain. Being on the border line of Georgia, Lake Chatuge covers part of Hayesville as well as neighboring Hiawassee, Georgia. Water sports are a very popular attraction to the area. Lake Chatuge offers boating, water skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing with incredibly beautiful surroundings.

Despite the small population, Hayesville has plenty of activity and excitement and is the county seat of Clay County. The historic downtown area of Hayesville attracts visitors from the nearby towns both in North Carolina as well as Georgia. The name Hayesville comes from the 19th-century politician George Hayes who played an integral part in the town’s founding.

Things To Do

Once settled in your dream home, Hayesville is sure to keep you entertained, no matter your preferences. Delightfully far from the ordinary, made for the masses commerce you can find crowding every major city, the area celebrates original, handmade products and artwork, and we take pride in local sustainability in our shops, festivals and restaurants. However, if you must travel to a larger city for any reason, Hayesville is not too far from both Chattanooga, Tennessee or Atlanta, Georgia.

Downtown Hayesville has several must-see attractions. The historic courthouse and jail has been converted into the Clay County Museum and highlights the county’s rich Cherokee history and is one of many stops along the Quanassee Path. This path runs along all the historic Cherokee sites in and around Hayesville. The first stop is the Clay County Museum, then travels on to the Cherokee Cultural Center, the Cherokee Homestead Exhibit, the Cherokee Botanical Sanctuary, and the Spikebuck Mound. While enjoying the sites and the history along this intriguing trail you can stop at Tiger’s for ice cream, Angelo’s Pizza for a bite to eat, or the Nocturnal Brewing Company or Black Dog Tavern for an ice cold beverage.

Clay County Recreation Area is outfitted with camping areas, bathrooms, shower facilities, a pavilion, a children’s playground, pathways to walk along the beach, park, and forests, fishing areas, a ballpark, and a public boat ramp. The beautiful park is made up of 221 square miles within the Nantahala National Forest. The scenic shoreline of Lake Chatuge makes for a picturesque and relaxing camping spot. Visitors to this campground can also enjoy a bit of excitement by way of boat and jet ski rentals available. Clay County Recreation Area has something fun for everyone.

Jackrabbit Mountain Campground is another relaxing area to sleep under the stars. The three campground loops offer 92 wooded sites, most of which provide views of the beautiful Lake Chatuge. Jackrabbit features over 15 miles of machine-cut biking trails to add to the excitement.

There are several marinas and boat rental opportunities in Hayesville. The proximity to lakes and rivers allow for the perfect opportunity to get out on the water and enjoy the gorgeous North Carolina air. Boundary Waters Resort and Marina and The Ridges both offer boat rentals and sales, jet ski rentals, kayak, canoe, and paddle board rentals to indulge in outdoor activities on the water.

The Hayesville Square found in the center of town is lined with interesting local shops, live music venues, and delicious restaurants including The Copper Door Restaurant, Hayesville’s most famous five-star culinary experience. Additionally, several breweries and pubs have popped up in the last few years providing unique craft beers, spirits, and wines. Live music is played in the square every Friday night and annual events take place in this perfect location year-round.
